Pune Porsche Case: Crime Not Heinous Enough, Court

To absolutely nobody’s surprise, the teen who killed two techies while drunk driving will still be tried as a minor:

Why He Escaped Adult Trial
The Juvenile Justice Board ruled he can’t be tried as an adult since none of the charges—including culpable homicide—carry a minimum 7-year sentence, the legal threshold for “heinous” crimes.

Prosecution’s Stand
Special Public Prosecutor highlighted facts: a drunk minor, a luxury supercar, and 180 km/h speed. More crucially, he pointed to post-crime manipulation—evidence tampering, police interference, and clear misuse of power by the family.
The father and grandfather were accused of using influence to distort the investigation. The mother allegedly tried to replace her son’s blood sample with a driver’s. He argued that these actions show “maturity and criminal intent” and demanded a strong message be sent.

Juvenile Board’s Record
The same Juvenile Board came under fire last year when it granted bail within 15 hours of the accident and asked the accused to write a 300-word essay on road accidents. The public saw it as a mockery of justice, especially after evidence surfaced of police delay and favoritism.
This week’s ruling again raises concerns of how privilege insulates the powerful, even when young lives are lost and institutions are manipulated.

What’s Next?
The minor will continue to be treated as a juvenile. The trial will proceed under the juvenile system, with a focus on reform, not punishment.
