Two Brothers Marry One Bride Openly in Himachal’s Polyandry Tradition

Indian laws only recognize monogamous marriages (except under Muslim Law) rendering such unions legally invalid. The tradition, albeit almost extinct, still continues.

A rare polyandry marriage in Shillai village, Sirmaur district, Himachal Pradesh, not recognized under Indian law, has drawn attention to the Hatti community’s traditions. On July 10, 2025, brothers Pradeep Negi and Kapil Negi, (who works in hospitality abroad), married Sunita Chauhan in a ceremony rooted in the Hatti practice of Jodidaran, where brothers share a wife to preserve family unity and ancestral land. The marriage, held with mutual consent and community participation, followed traditional rituals.

Sunita stated, “This was my choice, and I was not pressured.” Pradeep emphasized, “It’s a mutual decision based on trust.” Kapil added, “This ensures support for our wife as a family.”
