In a gut-wrenching tale of familial betrayal in Aliyapur village, Hardoi district, Uttar Pradesh, 24-year-old Manvi Mishra, a determined female IAS aspirant, was brutally shot dead by her differently-abled brother, Ashutosh Mishra, with their mother’s active support. The ambitious woman, who had returned to her parental home to prepare for the UPSC civil services exam, fell victim to a suspected honour killing sparked by her January marriage to Abhinav Katiyar, a 28-year-old government school principal from Bareilly.
What happened was a chilling act of violence. On a fateful Sunday morning, Manvi was found lifeless with a gunshot wound to her head, a country-made pistol in her right hand. Her family claimed suicide, but forensic evidence—the bullet entering from the left side—proved murder. Under police pressure, Ashutosh confessed to firing the shot, with their mother aiding the plan, driven by outrage over Manvi’s “disobedient” Arya Samaj and court-registered marriage.
Police swiftly arrested Ashutosh and his mother, charging them with murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
