With only 938 women per 1000 men, Punjab has the second worst gender ratio in India. While neighboring Haryana gets the well deserved scrutiny, Punjab often escapes it. The recent Kamal Kaur murder and the mainstream support it received went largely unnoticed in feminist media.
The current heartbreaking case is from Jalandhar. A six-month-old girl was tragically strangled to death by her maternal grandparents, Tarsem Singh and Daljit Kaur, on August 18, 2025. The infant’s mother, Maninder Kaur, had left the child with them. Unable to cope with the baby’s crying, the grandparents killed her and disposed of the body in a culvert. They were arrested, and a murder case was registered.
