In Varanasi, a 19-year-old Class 12 student reported a harrowing gang rape case involving 23 men over seven days, from March 29 to April 4, 2025. The incident began when a friend lured her to a hookah bar in the city, where she was allegedly drugged with a spiked drink. Over the next week, she was taken to multiple locations, including hotels, cafés, and other hideouts, where she was repeatedly assaulted by the group. The perpetrators reportedly recorded the acts to blackmail her into silence. On April 4, she managed to return home and confided in her family, who promptly approached the police.
An FIR was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for gang rape, abduction, and criminal intimidation, naming 12 individuals and 11 unidentified accused. Varanasi police acted swiftly, arresting nine suspects, who were sent to 14-day judicial custody after court proceedings. Raids are ongoing to apprehend the remaining culprits. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a visit to his constituency, Varanasi, on April 6, directed authorities to ensure exemplary punishment for the accused, emphasizing zero tolerance for such crimes. The case has sparked outrage, with calls for justice and stricter measures to curb violence against women in the region.
